The Never Ending Love 12″ Square by Aurora Suominen has such a beautiful texture and the pattern looks gorgeous in one or more colors. try to use colors that would make those little hearts standing out from the background. You'll be surprised with the results!  However, as it happens in crochet, there is no rule for using multiple colors, this beautiful pattern looks so beautiful and delicate in solid colors too.
