The Foundation Double Crochet Stitch (fdc) also called chainless foundation for double crochet, allows you to start your project without making the chain before. You actually make your chain and your double croche simultaneously, as you go. You can use the chainless foundation in your patterns, as you\'ll see in the video below, there is really no much difference in the end result when using the traditional way and this chainless foundation, the only difference is that the chainless foundation is a bit stretchier.
For a better demonstration and understanding on how to work this stitch, Maggie Weldon of Maggie Crochet uses a rope which is brilliant. You can clearly and easily see how the Foundation Double Crochet Stitch is done and follow help directions with easiness.
Got inspired? Happy day crocheting!

Am so going to try this out
Can never find this when I’m starting new project.. Thank you
I dont like this – I LOVE this!!! (I find it a pain to count the chains then having to re-count them whole making an afghan and then sometimes missing a chain and having to start over. Sometimes the chain twists also. This way I wont have to do that any more)
Hahahahahaaa LMAO!!!!
I’ve tried this really pretty and super easy to do
This comment was for another post ugh!!!
LOL!
I love this but can’t figure how to attach it when used for a round.
I am going to have to try this.

Welcome Liz!
Am attempting this right now for a project I am doing……..I like the video tutorials when I need help with a stitch but they go so fast and by the time I stop the video to catch up I have to back it up, hell it takes me an hour to watch a 9 minute tutorial……..LOLOL
.
I’ve done that many times.
I like this stitch

Perfect for me thanks
wow time saver
Awesome! Making that starting chain has always been the hardest part of any pattern. Thanks!!
It gives a more flexible edge too.

Great idea!
What is the benefit of this?
I love this!!! Easier to keep a consistent edge! Much easier then starting with a chain!!
I just learned this today! 🙂
Call me old fashioned….maybe because I’ve been crocheting since I was 8 and that was many years ago, but I do not like working this stich. I still do my foundation stitches as always.
This is better then a chained foundation, and you can do it for a single crochet and half double. Nice clean edge!
i so prefer this way it seems much faster and neater
I use this foundation whenever I can, especially for afghans, scarves, and anything that needs a nice flexible edge.
I tried this once on an afghan and that edge was twice the length of the rest of the blanket. Nothing I did could get my stitches to match. (I refused to go 3 hook sizes smaller). Never tried it again.
I tried this one time. It did not go well
I did this stitch when I made a mermaid afghan!
I use this method. Much easier than making a chain and faster too!!!

Thank you for the video . I plan to use it on my next project.
This works really well……takes some work to keep track of where you are, but definitely worth it.
